Jon Carpenter (not in photo) who owns two Lancair experimental aircrafts, flies over Santa Monica in a four-man formation along side of Craig Schulze, top, and David LaFaille, center, minutes after having taken off from their hangers at Whiteman Airport in Pacoima, CA, on Wednesday, June 6, 2007. In a growing trend, Carpenter is one of over 5000 people who own experimental aircrafts which must be issued airworthiness certificate for "kit built" planes by the FAA prior to flight and have different cirtification methods than manufactured planes. As a hobby, Carpenter has built 15 experimental planes from composite materials such as fiberglass and carbon fiber which 90% of military planes are made of which makes them structurally safer than crafts using aluminum.
