Two suspects who allegedly stole a vehicle in Arizona commandeered a state park police SUV in the Castaic area today while they were being arrested, then led authorities on a pursuit across surface streets and freeways that ended about a half hour later in Sylmar, Monday, November 21, 2011.
The chase began about 10:30 a.m. near Smokey Bear Road and Pyramid Lake Road, said CHP Officer Francisco Villalobos. The chase went onto the southbound Golden State (5) Freeway, and ended on the eastbound Foothill (210) Freeway near Polk Street, Villalobos said.
Paramedics were sent to the site where the SUV stopped, on a report that one of the suspects had been shot in the abdomen during the initial traffic stop.
During the chase, the SUV exited the 5 Freeway, and while on a surface street, the
driver barreled through an intersection, sideswiping at least four vehicles.
According to the CHP, the suspects had been stopped by state park police and were in the process of being arrested when an altercation occurred and the male suspect was shot. A female suspect had been handcuffed and placed in the SUV, but somehow the male suspect eluded the arresting officers and jumped into the police SUV and drove off, according to the CHP.
