11-20-10 - Zeke Thomas,12, of Gardena Calif., shows off his catfish he caught at the annual Youth Fishing Derby, sponsored by the Dan Hernandez Youth Foundation, in cooperation with the Long Beach Department of Parks, Recreation and Marine, the event was free at the El Dorado East Regional Park lake in Long Beach. Kids ages 5-15 were invited to cast a line in the water. Individuals over 16 years of age may participate but are required to have a California State Fishing License. The fishing derby is designed to give boys and girls who live in urban areas an opportunity to enjoy a fishing experience in or close to their own neighborhood, with rod & reels, tackle, bait, was provided. Volunteers and staff of the Daniel Hernandez Youth Foundation were on hand to lend rods and reels, and to educate kids on proper fishing
techniques and etiquette.
