1/27/10 - Preschooler Kamiya Johnson-Elder signs her name in a book donated by the Long Beach Rotary's Charitable Foundation on Wednesday morning with help from Sarah Naccarato, Rotary member. The Rotary has collected contributions to this cause at its meetings, gathering about $275,000 in donations and matching funds for the literacy effort over the years. This year for the first time, the Reading by 9 project expanded beyond elementary schools to benefit Child Development Centers. Rotary is putting a new book in the hands of all 1,200 CDC preschoolers this year, and is donating hundreds more books to CDC and elementary school libraries. In all, the Child Development Centers are receiving more than 3,200 books from Rotary this year. Long Beach Rotary is the city's oldest and largest service club.
