Signal Hill, Calif. --12-22-11 - Jessie Elwin Nelson Middle School in Signal Hill. A recent report by the state auditor's office shows that thousands of school construction projects in the state remain uncertified by the Division of the State Architect, which is responsible for making sure schools are earthquake safe. The auditor slams the DSA's lack of oversight as the problem. Nearly 300 projects in the LBUSD are still uncertified although some were built several years ago. The district is now working to certify those projects but it's a long process. Nelson Middle school, which is set to open next year, is awaiting DSA certification.
