092009- Triathlete and 2007 Ironman world champion Chris McCormack, of Australia, celebrates with members of the crowd as he finished first in the 11th annual Long Beach Triathlon Sunday, September 20, 2009. Four times now he has finished an Ironman under the mythical 8 hours, a feat no other athlete has ever accomplished. Pro and amateur athletes ran swam and biked along the Long Beach City downtown shoreline area. As a sprint triathlon, the race covers roughly half the classic Olympic triathlon distance, where athletes compete in a mile swim, an 11-mile cycling race, and a 3-mile run. All proceeds from the triathlon go towards supporting the Comprehensive AIDS Resource and Education (C.A.R.E.) program at St. Mary Medical Center, the largest comprehensive HIV provider in the Greater Long Beach area.
