L.A. County Sheriff Lee Baca
HAWAIIAN GARDENS, CALIF. -- Terryl Bruce, left, and her husband, Pastor Barry Bruce, chat with Los Angeles County Sheriff Lee Baca a city council meeting in Hawaiian Gardens, Calif. on Tuesday, October 13, 2009. Baca returned to Hawaiian Gardens to discuss the gang injunction situation. Baca responded to residents complaints several months ago when the District Attorney's office and the feds put together an injunction against the oldest gang in the city. While some residents lauded the effort, others said it was an excuse for sheriff's deputies and the DA to harass Latino residents. The gang, which is largely Hispanic, is known for a variety of dangerous criminal pursuits, from homicides to drug and weapons dealing through Mexican cartels. The injunction was spurred primarily by the murder of Sheriff's Deputy Jerry Ortiz, who was shot in the head by one of the gang's members as the deputy stood talking to a woman and her two children.
